On my winXP professional:

"Windows must shut down because the return service procedure (RCP) has unexpectedly terminated."

What the fuck is with this message, and why do I get it like every five minutes?

Sorry, it was more like this:

"windows must now restart because the remote procedure call (RCP) serviece termindated unexpectedly"

And really, I meant "RPC" stupid transpositions... and stupid RPC terminating all the time...

Mine does that too. Only it would usually happen during the Sims. And i'd get pissed off because I hadn't saved yet. But regardless, it always blue screens and says that whenever i'm in the middle of something... Grrr... Must kill Bill Gates...

I actually got hit by this today, which is pretty lame. I had my firewall down for some reason. Here's removal info I got off Slashdot:

So yeah you want this patch that Kramer suggested.

You will also need to manually shut down msblast.exe on your CTRL-ALT-DEL task manager before you can delete it.

That's weird, my aunt called me about an error mcafee picked up called the exploit-dcomrpc virus, which sounds a lot like what you're describing. I wonder if that patch would fix it.

It's always a good idea to have the latest security patches blah blah blah yak yak yak.

Anyhow, make sure you're firewalled (turn it on in your network options in XP) and install that patch and make sure it's removed and everything should be fine. Worked for me.

Well after doing all the stuff brad posted, and turning on the firewall, it gave me enough time to download the patch. I haven't seen anything of this sort happen since then.

Good to hear. Mine's been running for over a day now with no problems, so hopefully that's that.
