Since Enterprise is a rerun tonight, I watched an episode of That 80's Show to see what it's like. It really sucks. Instead of trying to realistically portray the 80's, as Freaks and Geeks so ably did, it plays up on stereotypes about the 80's, such as greed and irresponsibility. As someone who was actually a teenager during the 80's, I cannot relate to this show at all. And the girl with the spiked hair looks more like a 90's goth than an 80's punk. She wears a nose ring, which became a big fad only in the 90's, and she lacks the colored hair that was typical of 80's punks.

On the plus side, it is so terribly bad that it may have some of the campy appeal that Ed Wood movies have. And the father of one of the girls is played by the same actor who played Jack on Unhappily Ever After.

The 80's sucked, truly the worst.decade.ever!

Even if there was some really horrible 10 year war where people were forced to eat their own children to survive, it would have been better than the shit-hole that was the 80's, full of pretentios wankers trying desperately to be more rebelious than the 60's and more fashionable than the 70's, the results were terrible, if it weren't for Corey Feldman, I'd build a time machine and send a nuclear bomb to 1981!

The 70s drove me to drugs. So I didn't have to put up with much in the 80s. But then I sobered up to some extent in the 90s. Now I'm old enough and my TV stays unplugged, so that these sweeping social movements don't come near me.

Except SC.

Although the 20th century has known a faster pace of change than any previous century, my experience is that human nature remains one of the most stable things we can count on. My main problem with That 80's Show is how it portrays 80's people as shallow twits who are merely into sexing, drugging, and rocking. It just plays up the sex, drugs and rock & roll stereotype instead of portraying them realistically. I don't think the main difference between then and now is in what people were like, but in other things, such as technology, fashion, social consciousness, popular culture, and politics. The people of the 80's were very much like the people of today, and most of them are the same people.

I think we're all missing out on how good the 70's show was in comparision.

BTW, doesn't enterprise suck too?

That 70's Show is certainly a better show. When it began, it was my favorite new comedy of the season. I think I stopped watching it mainly because I can devote only so much time to watching TV, and there are so many other shows I like.

Although I would rather have Janeway, Seven of Nine, and the holographic Doctor, I do enjoy Enterprise, and I don't think it sucks. However, I am annoyed by the anachronism of the crew seeing Klingons in their true form instead of how they disguised themselves in the original series.

Since Voyager, Jeri Ryan (Seven of Nine) has taken a role on Boston Public as a high school teacher named Ronnie Cook. Boston Public is one of my all-time favorite shows. It's one show that's a lot better than Enterprise.

So *that* is the halfassed explanation that Gene R. gave to explain the different appearance of the early Klingons.

I feel this is something I need to know.
Wait, what does a Klingon pretend to look like? and what does a REAL one look like?

I feel this is something I need to know.
It's basically like this. Back in the 1960s, when the original series had a shoestring budget and laughable (by today's standards) special effects, Klingons looked something like humans with green greasepaint on their faces. But with the adevent of the movies and then the sequel series in the 1980s, Klingons were made to look truly alien, with forehead ridges and whatnot.

Of course, this being Trek, there was always some trekgeek asking why Klingons don't look anything like other Klingons. That question has never been really answered satisfactorily, although in one episode, a Klingon confronted with the question said something along the lines of "That is not something we discuss in polite company."

ARGH kaufman beat me to it.

One of the fan reasons that I've heard to account for the early lack of good makeup was that the klingons evolved over time, and eventually the way their heads look grew to be normal. This flew out the window when they came out with the episode 148 of TNG, Rightful heir, in which the ancient folk her/emperor Kahless was cloned and bought back to put faith back in the klingon people. He had a messed up head just like all the other klingons with better makeup from TNG.

Actually, Worf said, "We do not speak of it." in the DS9 episode where they went back in time to the original series episode with the tribbles. Some fine effects work in that.

Yeah, I'm a trek geek.

In some books it was said that there were two races of Klingons, and the ridged ones became dominant sometime between the TOS 5-year mission and The Motion Picture.

Of course, this flies in face of the fact that TOS Klingons Kor (John Colicos, Baltar of Battlestar Galactica fame) and Kang were featured in several DS9 episodes as elderly "ridged Klingon" friends of Kurzon/Jadzia Dax.

...Trot and Cap'n Bill were free from anxiety and care. Button-Bright never worried about anything. The Scarecrow, not being able to sleep, looked out of the window and tried to count the stars.

Why is it that the Klingon ridges are debated so much amongst Trek geeks, but nobody seems to care that the Romulans developed much uglier forehead bumps around the same time?

JM Dillard wrote "The Lost Years" and a sequal based in that time period, but it didn't have anything to do with that. Just thought i'd mention it; the book has some interesting Vulcan/Romulan ancient history in it.

phooey! I knew about those but never saw the episode...
basicly almost ST/SW historical anyalisis is jumbled and messed up because of different authors, difference in recources(like the ship differences, now we've got an ugly old enterprise on TV), and just the producers saying 'screw it, lets rewrite the fanfiction'.

One instance that bugged me was the different origions of Boba Fett in SW; where he was a police officer/detective thingy on a planet far away and had commited a horible crime and been exiled. Or he was the last of the Mandaloreans. But NO, Lucas goes and makes up a dumber story for him. I tell you, that guy is off his rocker.

Yes, but Fox is also cancelling Futurama. I'd gladly live with having That 80's Show on the air if I could keep one of the three shows I watch on Fox.

BTW, www.subgenius.com has a petition to keep Futurama going.
