I got to thinking today, after killing a carpenter ant, then setting it on fire until I heard it "pop", what a horrible person I am. What if someone did the same to me because they were terrified of what I might do to them or their home?

That's probably why the giant was trying to kill Jack after he climbed that beanstalk.

I came home drunk one night to find a slug crawling across my kitchen top. I covered it in salt. The result was as disgusting as it was painful to witness.

I am now much more humane to the household pests; I throw the bastards out onto the gravel in front of the flat for the birds to catch and eat in the morning. I only hope someone/thing would do the same for me were I invading its kitchen.

I'm terrified of insects. Yes, big bad army man is afraid of insects. Well, you would be too if you were allergic to insect bites. And had fire ants infest your locker during Basic Training. And during my Army tech school... and that box of Capri Suns that my mom had JUST brought in from the store when I was 11... In fact, those ants are trying to kill me, I know it!

Mice I'll catch and release. Small animals like rodents and birds and reptiles will get put outside, but insects get smashed.

An army veteran friend of mine (he got thrown out when he was caught sucking some other recruit's dick - don't ask, don't tell, but mainly just don't get caught) thought it might be fun to get himself bitten by a black widow spider. So he did. No antivenin or anything, just let it run its course. As I recall, he said he had a very trippy three days but suffered no lasting damage.

Unless its a spider or bee, I just pick up an insect, study it for a few minutes, and throw it calmly outside. I grew up in a swamp, so all kinds of things have been found in corners and whatnot that have decided to make my dwelling their dwelling.

Now if it IS a spider (I'm an arachniphobe, and you would be too if one the size of your hand fell into the bathtub with you when you were little...) or bee (my mom has a deadly allergy to bee venom) I'll squish the bloody hell out of it and clean up the reminants with a tissue.

My house is my house. If there's a bug in it, it deserves to get squished. If I can grab it and toss it outside without getting too grossed out, fine. Otherwise, squish. The bug shouldn't have been in my damn house.

Camel spiders exist, though that one photo floating around the internet isn't even a remotely believeable hoax. Those things are kinda big, bodies about the size of your thumb, but the the biggest things you'll see out here are lizards and mice and stuff.

I have yet to see any scorpions, however. I know they're here, I just don't see 'em.

In Seattle we are sometimes trapped in our houses by massive highly poisonous spiders; hobos. The young males have huge mandibles and threaten ass-rape if we so much as breath funny. Sometimes it takes 3 or 4 Starbucks just to work up the courage to beg for mercy.

We had a real problem with Black Widows when I was in Basic Training in South Carolina. They were harmless as long as you respected them, but they got really pissed if somebody assumed their late husbands were victims of gang violence or drug deals gone bad.
