Really? I thought the first was much, much better. There's no reason for the hippy guy to have all those signs! Or for him to be a hippy at all. Damn.

true, the first comic does contain nostalgic autobiographical information used to gain empathy from the reader. however, the punchline was a bit trite.

the second comic is more of a fanciful present-day exposition. the hippy is necessary because he represents the mores of a past era--even if the signs are a tad distracting. the resultant drug-induced poem made me laugh and its last line was the cinching aspect. after all, who doesn't enjoy an extended "fuck?"
