When it comes to addressing someone who you don't know personally in life, you address them as Mr. Lastname or Ms. Lastname, correct?

So why should the internet be any different?

If someone who doesn't know me personally addresses me as Gia, I take it as somewhat of an insult. I mean, most people ask "What do you like to be called?" before addressing me as Gia. Since I'm not going to just offer up my last name to anyone on the internet, I would expect them to call me attitudechicka, as that is the closest to a formal name as you can have on the internet.

Even persons from this site have called me attitudechicka for a while before shortening it to A_Chicka, then to Chicka, then the select few who call me by one of my nicknames/my first name.

I also think that your mouse should be on the right side of your computer keyboard, which should be directly in front of your monitor and you should have a drink of some kind to the left.

Mind your computer manners!

Actually, this is no longer the way you do it in Denmark. If you address a stranger with their last name or say the equivalents of Mr. and Ms., you'd sound extremely formal, and it's almost only the members of parliament or waiters who do like that.

If I for example visit a prospective customer and we introduce, we'll present ourselves with our first names. The "What do you like to be called" routine has no place anymore.

Then your formality is to call the person by the name they give you. For example, a customer is called Robert. You say Hello, my name is lukket, and I would be happy to assist you today. Robert says Hello, my name is Robert, and I am looking for such item. You continue to call him Robert, not Bob or Bobby or Bob-meister. It's not much different from what I'm saying.

I present myself on the internet as "attitudechicka". I expect to be referred to as attitudechicka, A_Chicka, Chicka or another variation (because I know computer users are lazy with their lols and such), not my first name, unless I say "Please, call me Gia." or along those lines.

I met a pro-wrestler (his character name is Raven) and I had heard before hand that he had a real thing about people not calling him by his real name. His reasoning was that his real name (Scott) was for his personal life and if you don't know him personally then you should refer to him by the name that you know him as (Raven). Anywho, it felt a little silly to call him 'Raven' but I did it because I knew he had a thing about it.

I did find his reasoning a little silly, though. I mean, I don't know Tom Cruise personally but I'm also not going to call him Cole Trickle (his character in Days of Thunder) either.

That being said, I like Chicka a great deal and will call her whatever she wants to be called.

Agree with chicka.

Recruitment consultants see my CV (resumé) on-line all the time, then make me cringe and hate them by using my real first name in every other sentence on the phone when they call.

In any circumstance, it's hell of impersonal when your name is used too often and/or inappropriately with someone you've just met.

Also they pronounce "jes_" as "Jess" and not "Jez" - the underscore makes it a hard consonant. Eejits.

I think I know what names to use in September, which can only be good.

disagree with attitudechicka

the only legitimate reason for etiquette is to convey to the person you are speaking that you respect their limits and respect huamnlife in general

the problem is that it completely shits on individuality so what you have is a bunch of people who like the formalism trying to pass it off that this is how it should be for everyone. and those like me that couldn't give a preggo fuck are pressured to conform like sheep. fuck that. do it on an individual level. don't try to create some all-encompassing rules, instead say, 'i personally preferred to be called attitudechicka online until you've gotten to know me better' and i'll say 'i personally don't care so call me whatever you want' and HCRoyall will say 'i prefer to be called Thor, King of the Jungle of Love.'

going that route not only conveys respect for limits, but it also allows for individuality, both yours and my own
