This is what I replied to nicejohnson's plea for help for Valentine's Day:
I've been single on several a Valentine's Day and I never made as big a deal out of it as you. I think it's pathetic that it's such a big deal to you that you'd be desperate enough to ask strangers on the internet for advice on how to snag a guy for this occasion. Furthermore, you're young and there are at least 70 more Valentine's Days in your future for you to have a date for. I realize the lure of boys is strong at your age, but they're all pretty much jerks at your age too. Save yourself the trouble and go out with some girl friends.

I used to have a single's night out for Valentine's Day for all those who didn't have a SO to share the day with. I mean, just because they're the same sex doesn't mean they don't love you. I'm really sorry cheap Hallmark tricks work on you to make you feel depressed and sad on a day when there are plenty of others out there who would love to spend their time with you. It's just a day, they just throw a tag on it. I hope you're not back in October asking advice on how to get a guy for "Sweetest Day".

Also, I dislike guys who think Valentine's Day is some sort of way to make up for all the crap they give you the rest of the year. ("Remember that bracelet I got you for Valentine's Day this year?" "That was 5 months ago, what have you done for me lately, besides throw your beer cans on the floor 'so I'd have something to do'?")

I hate to sound so negative, but seriously, it's just another day, and nothing to get worked up over. Especially since most guys your age don't even have enough money to take you anywhere better than McD's anyway.
If you want to attack me, do so here. Yes, I realize it's easier to say when you have someone to spend Valentine's Day with, but that doesn't mean I haven't been there and I wouldn't say the same if I were single.

I won't be alone on Valentine's day. I have my friends Jack, Jose, Jameson, Bailey, Jim and Bushmill to keep me company. And they'll be keeping me company, be sure of that.

I read the title of this thread and thought of one of those campy 50s movies.

Yeah, what you wrote is actually pretty sound advice. Thing is that a lot of that stuff you have to experience to get the meaning of... or at least be really perceptive of what happens with the people around you. That seems to be the holding pattern for those I know, at least.

Personally, I think Valentine's Day is a pretty miserable holiday regardless of whether or not I'm with someone at the time. If a person is going have their insecurities preyed upon though, they might as well take the opportunity to be braver and more sociable than they normally would, which is probably the one and only thing I can say in defense of the day.

Meh. It's weighed out by the fact that you feel even more depressed than usual on this day if you're alone and actually wanting someone. I'll just be glad when it's over, because then I can buy chocolate for cheap, also, I won't have to see any more GODDAMNED VDAY ADS.

Dude, try spending it with a woman who, after you've been dating for a good long while, out of nowhere insists on spending several hours after your Valentine's dinner date ignoring you to flirt with her guy friends on AIM. There are definitely more humiliating and upsetting ways to spend VD than alone.

Imo, your using harsh words like "pathetic" made your entire post much more telling about you, and probably about your past disappointments with valentine's day and steeling yourself against it, then it did about nicejohnson's purported pathetic-ness.

Before I met my wife, I used to have my annual V-Day Anti-Love Song Fest, where I'd invite my fellow singletons over and we'd listen to stuff like Morrissey, My Bloody Valentine, and Pantera's "This Love" over and over. 'Twas fun.

One year I got dumped the day before Valentine's. That was the best one. Yeah. Such fun. ;)

That went mostly over my head. I've got a bit of it in my hair.

1. I'm sorry some of you don't have dates for Valentine's Day. But I do. I'm going to enjoy it. You're welcome to live bicariously through my life.

2. I'm jealous that none of you singletons had to freak out about what to get your SO. It sucks when you have no money and then V Day hits you like a bomb.

3. You also don't have any expectations, so things could always be better. However, with expectations, things only seem to get worse. Surprises are rarely fun either.

I have more to say, but my brain's not working. I'm still proud that I paid attention to myself long enough to make the original post.
