When I was a lad, me mum and dad would toss the lot of us into a wee rusty toolbox with naught but a old pipe wrench for a pillow. We'd get up at six o'clock in the morning, eat a handful of hot gravel, go to work down at mill for tuppence a month and when we got home, our dad would thrash us to sleep with his belt.

True story: My great grandmother's crib was the oven. She was tiny (came out under 5lbs), and the only way to keep her warm enough was to store her in the oven. It's a wonder my family isn't stupider than they are, considering there were only gas ovens back then.
