I was just saying the other day that it's kind of amusing that my favorite hip-hop album of the new millennium was made by a British guy who, 10 years ago, was a virtual Ray Davies impersonator.

I would hardly call Demon Days a hip hop album. Only like 2 songs have anything even resembling rapping on them.

I'm not really sure about their whole pretending to be comic characters thing, but this album is really good. I liked the last one better, though.

I liked the last one better too. This one is a little to whiny for my tastes. Its still pretty good.

That "comic characters" thing is entirely necessary; Gorillaz is not a band, it's Damon Albarn collaborating with as many people as he wants/can. It'd be dumb to just have him because it's not just him in that same sense. Plus, it's neat. Sometime next year he plans on doing shows with holograms.

It's hip-hop in spirit. Built on loops and rhythms, and awash in sonic experimentation. It's hip-hop in the same way DJ Shadow is.

Gorrilaz have been playing live gigs behind animated screens since about 6 months after they first started. While Damon is the instantly recognisable lead vocalist, it's not a solo project.

And you're right, it's not a solo project, it's quite the opposite. Gorillaz is essentially a superband, one like The Reindeer Section; the both of which when, at recording time, have a LOT of members, yet the only constant members of each band were the vocalists; Damon Albarn and Gary Lightbody(respectively). In the case of Gorillaz, even the producer was changed between albums, going from Dan the Automator for the S/T to Dangermouse for Demon Days.

In the studio, "Demon Days" era Gorillaz had 20 members, "S/T" era Gorillaz had 24. I could list them if you'd like.
