The guy responsible has a page (mind the babelfish) explaining how he did it. He used an emulator that lets him play at reduced speed and back up the recording to a previous save state (according to the downloadable rom recording on his homepage, he rerecorded over 40,000 times).

The farthest I've ever gotten in that game without using whistles would probably be world 4, which is why I am going to challenge myself this weekend to beat the entire game without using 1 cheat. :) Now, if only I could get the dust out of my NES. It's been sitting on my computer desk hooked up to the TV since last year, it broke in March. Fuck.

I would have to dispute that claim - mainly in regards to Super Mario Bros. 2. Luigi was my favorite character to use. His high jumping skills really helped out in tight situations.
